Wireless Enabling Education and Research Activities

 The introduction of new technologies both internal and external to the classroom affect both the teaching / learning process as well as the way that curricula is presented to students. The introduction of wireless networks that guarantee mobility through out the campus as well as a series of always on line and on demand services affect the way that students interact with the professors and the way the curricula is outlaid in the universities. Frequently the introduction of this system is not well integrated with the services or the training materials . It is incumbent on us to ensure efficient ways to maximize the use of these new facilities by both the students and the instructors. This paper is a case study of the approach implemented by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of New Mexico, in coordination with the Ibero American Science and Technology Consortium (ISTEC). This approach incorporates the new wireless technologies into the learning process as well as the resource access on a particular campus, by incorporating a series of distance education and remote assessment tools available trough the wireless networks. Similarly the content is adapted for access by particular facilities and applications, providing the instructors with additional mobile access for assessment and fully mobile classroom integration and resource management.
